Metro Minnesota Valentine’s Day Date Night Ideas

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about how to treat your significant other. For some, planning a Valentine’s Day date is a no-brainer, but for others, planning the perfect night out takes a bit of effort. Thankfully, the Minneapolis-St. Paul area offers plenty to choose from. Recently, Forbes named the city as one of the world’s 10 Most Unexpectedly Romantic Cities. If you are in need of some inspiration for your Valentine’s Day plans, check out some of these great options in the Twin Cities area!

Skate the night away

For many Minnesota residents, ice skating is a classic winter activity and can be a fun and romantic way to spend your Valentine’s Day evening. With many options both indoors and outdoors to choose from, a night on the ice can be a memorable and exciting date night. Be sure to dress warm as the temps can drop quickly once the sun goes down! The colder temperatures can be a great excuse to hold your valentine extra close!

Dine at a delectable restaurant

If a traditional night out is more your style, you can book a reservation at one of the cities many top rated restaurants, such as the Spoon and Stable or 112 Eatery and treat your date to a nice evening out complete with a great meal and a bottle of wine. Follow this up with a walk along the city’s Riverwalk, where you can head out for more drinks at one of the many nearby bars or breweries or just pick a pretty spot to sit and enjoy the view or the river or city skyline. 

Make the night magical with a horse-drawn carriage tour

Another romantic option to choose from is a horse drawn carriage ride with the Hitching Company. Tours are 30 minutes long and start at $72 for up to 4 people. You’ll be treated with great views of the city and the Mississippi River. 

Celebrate the occasion over many special events

If you’re hoping to plan something out of the ordinary, you can attend one of the city’s many Valentine’s Day events. No matter what you’re looking for, the Twin Cities area is sure to have something to offer. Here are just a few examples of things happening around Valentine’s Day!

For 2019, Valentine’s Day itself falls on a Thursday, meaning that many events take place the weekend prior or after. Whether you’d like to celebrate on a weekend or a the day of may influence some of your options. 

Are you and your significant other the type to ring in a holiday with a 5k? If so, look no further than the city’s annual Valentine’s Day TC 5K held on Saturday, February 9th. Instead of cuddling up together on the couch, exercise is another great way to keep warm in the wintertime!

Head to the Bucket Brigade Theatre for their showing of “‘Til Death” a musical about the ups and downs of marriage. With shows every Friday and Saturday evening from February 1-23rd and an additional performance on Valentine’s Day itself, there are plenty of options to make this part of your Valentine’s Day celebration. 

Pinot’s Palette, a painting studio in St. Paul, offers a few different Valentine’s Day events including one called “Love is in the Trees.” Here, you and your valentine can learn to paint trees while guided by a trained, local artist and instructor. Nothing beats painting a magical landscape while sipping on your favorite merlot. All of your painting supplies as well as a glass of wine are provided as they walk you through the process of painting a scene. Though outside food and drink is not allowed, beer and wine are both available for purchase on-site. 

If you and your valentine are ready to get back outside after spending most of the winter cooped up indoors, snowshoeing is a great Valentine’s Day activity. Wander around seldom visited parts of Wirth Park with a naturalist guide, then enjoy some hot chocolate to warm you up afterwards. 

Though the Twin Cities may not come to mind as a romantic place to spend your Valentine’s Day, it’s a convenient and fun area to explore. Whether you’re hoping for a quiet evening of dinner and drinks or something more exciting, the city has lots to offer and is a great place to treat your significant other to a memorable night on the town.
